Owl Post meme, a bit late, sorry sorry.

OWL MAIL

Wizards might not text with a mobile phone all that often, but they do have other methods of communication available when it comes to a quick chat with their mates (or enemies) at any hour of the day.

Post your characters, name, and preferences in the title area. You can include a generic starter if you want, or just post a blank. Anything goes.

1. OWL MAIL
This might be a little slow for quicker chats, especially if you're close by, but it's good to give the bird some exercise!

2. FIRE CALL
Just pop your head into that fire and chat away. Probably not recommended for drunken calls.

3. ENCHANTED MIRROR
Those little reflective surfaces that show your friend's face whenever you might need to tell them something. Maybe you can enchant them to connect to any reflective surface around your chosen contact? (Maybe not the bathroom...)

4. HOWLERS
Ever received one? It's supposed to be absolutely horrible.

5. OTHER MAGICAL COMMUNICATION
The ones above are hardly the only way wizards can reach out to each other for a quick chat. Feel free to invent new items or use something like enchanted notebooks that you write in and the other sees the text at their end. You could also use flying letters, talking portraits, or, well, cellphones, if you will.

My dearest friend Moony,

I am moved by your concern but I can assure you, my silence has everything to do with planning for the wedding. More accurately, planning for the stag party, and although I would love to involve you in on it I'm afraid that there might be plans you wouldn't really approve of. One of those situations where I know you'll all love it when it's happening, nothing to fret your pretty head about.

Prongs, however, truly has been up to his ears in wedding planning. Lily is rampaging as usual, in the way that makes us all love her, and I've been avoiding their place because honestly she get's quite scary when she's like this.

I'm glad you wrote, I have a question for you. If you were to be in a location with an attractive dancer would you prefer that dancer to be male or female in gender? Asking out of pure curiosity and no other reason.

Your wonderfully thoughtful friend,
Padfoot

P.S: Although I'm honored that you would play such an appropriate and thoughtful song at my wake, I think it would be only fitting for the song to be Black Dog by Zeppelin. It'll double as Snuffles coming out party to the world.

Sirius,

Now, that hurts. You know I only disapprove if I feel someone might come to bodily harm. Is someone going to come to bodily harm? I suppose I was correct in assuming that I should be worried. Please try not to lose any fingers, Pads.

Oh, well, yes I'm sure he's drowning, good of you to ignore him in his time of need, lest he drag you down to the pit with him. I suppose he did choose it, however, when he proposed. Prongs isn't always the forward-thinking sort, but when you ask for a wedding, you're asking for all the fire and brimstone that comes with it. I almost feel sorry for Lily, to be perfectly honest, as I'm sure James is all but useless; perhaps I should extend a helping hand.

I don't know why you bothered to even waste ink asking me that question, when you know very well that my answer will be neither, thank you. I don't want any of your scantily clad dancers in my business, I just want to enjoy myself with a drink and a smoke in peace, honestly.

Desperately suspicious,
Moony

P.S. You're quite right, what was I thinking? Though you know, it's got my thoughts wandering, now. If you died as Padfoot, would you revert back, or would we need to bury you as a dog? We could always have you stuffed, instead, and keep you around forever. You'd make a very handsome ottoman.

Remus,

Prongs might but only because Lily will kill him, and if that's the case she's certain to turn her fury onto me. I'm trying to protect you, it's out of love.

He chose this himself, just remember that. Marriage is a part of a system that I plan on having no part of, he's chosen his own fate and now he has to deal with the consequences of that. I certainly can't be holding his hand his entire life now, can I? I'll be saying the same about you if you decide to help them. Remember you've chosen your path.

Remus, let me rephrase my question then; I'm getting you a dancer, which type would you prefer or would you rather be surprised? I'm not sure where you misread me in thinking you have a choice in the matter but I though it best to clarify.

I'll certainly make sure that you can have a proper smoke though, don't worry.

Completely in control,
Pads

P.S: Although I can't see a situation in which I would die as a dog, I am both disturbed and touched in knowing that you would want to fill me with cotton and keep me to hold your coasters and ashtrays. You have permission as long as you brush me.

Padfoot,

Well, if Lily kills him I'm sure he'll have done something to deserve it. I'm not entirely sure that I believe your reasoning, but I'll skeptically thank you for it nonetheless.

Anything that may or may not happen to me if I choose to offer a hand is on my head, I know, but Lily is much quicker to forgive me than she is either of you, so you can be sure I'll use it to my advantage. Really, though? You've never considered marriage?

Outwardly refusing won't get me anywhere, will it? You'll do it no matter what I say. I have no preference to gender, Pads, but if you embarrass me I hope you know that my vengeance will strike hard, and when you're least expecting it. Prodding sleeping dragons, and all that. Or wolves, perhaps, in this case. Besides, it's not my stag party, why am I getting a dancer? How is this happening? I'm a good person, what have I done to deserve this?

Begrudgingly prepared to clean up your mess,
Remus

P.S. And my feet as well, don't forget. You'll keep me company those long nights I'm awake reading or writing, sturdy and strong but soft enough to rest my ankles on. You won't get nearly as dirty or tangled when you're playing footrest, but I'll be sure to keep you brushed anyway, if only for nostalgia, and to honor your wishes.

Moony,

I always knew that you used Lily's preference for you to your advantage and I find it both insulting and impressive. Does she know you're just as bad as we are or have you truly managed to convince her that you're different than your good friends?

You already know the answer to that so I don't know why you're asking. That's perfect though, I'll get you a nice bloke, maybe a blonde. I don't fear the vengeance of others, you should know this by now. Give me your worst, but know that you're retaliating to something that your friend thought you would genuinely enjoy. Bit heartless of you, really. And everybody gets a dancer, Remus, don't be foolish, I'm in charge of the entire party. Me. This isn't amateur hour.

Quite capable thank you very much,
Sirius

P.S. I'll be long gone so you could use me for whatever you wish, Moony. Just know that if you disrespect my mane I'll haunt your arse.

Pads,

I think in her heart of hearts she knows how truly devious I am, but perhaps she respects my outward politeness enough to let it go. I'm quiet and accommodating enough that she's lulled into a false sense of security, but I in no way think that she truly believes it. Still, it works in my favor regardless.

Wasting my breath (or my ink, that is) on blind hope, I suppose. And I in no way believe that you can even kid about attempting to bring me genuine enjoyment when I have literally told you, quill to parchment, that no, I want no unscrupulous dancers in my space. But still you hound me, relentlessly, when I have done nothing ever to deserve it. I don't know why I put up with this. I suppose because you're cute, sometimes, with those puppy dog eyes.

Not doubting your capability, only your judgment,
Your Suffering Moony

P.S. I'd never disrespect your mane. I'm offended that you would even suggest such a thing.

Hiya Cissy,

Found this locket on my last trip to Knockturn Alley, it's supposedly cursed (not that I'd know) so I figured you could add it to the manor collection. Should be safe to wear too as long as you don't open it.

If you ever have Mr Borgin or Mr Burke over for dinner you might want to keep it out of sight though, just to avoid misunderstandings about whether or not it was paid for.

Love

Aisling

Nymphadora,

| She wants to write that she is wrong, that this is what it should be like, that Andromeda sealed the fate of her daughter and unborn grandchild, even if that child wasn't part-werewolf to begin with, years and years ago. But in her mind, she had never seen them murdered – gone, yes, and the disjoint is glaringly obvious now, but not... murdered. Just gone.

Of course, even during the first war, she couldn't escape the news, but how could she reconcile "Family found brutally murdered in their own home" with the husband who bounced their baby boy on his knee, the sister who had always been there for her?

And now she knows the stone-cold terror that comes with knowing that the Dark Lord wishes harm upon your child. She has seen the look in her sister's eyes that means she wouldn't be deterred by her victim's age or defencelessness, if she was given the order. And she knows that Lucius wouldn't have options.
|

What can I tell you? If you roam with wild beasts, they will act according to their nature. They will abandon you, regardless of your state. And they will kill, given the chance. They won't hesitate. A child's life is a trivial matter, to them.

| She loves them, still. Her husband, in spite of his cowardice and arrogance and the fact that he got them in so deep. Her sister, even though she has shifted, warped almost beyond recognition. |

There is nothing that can be done.

| She doesn't sign it. Her handwriting is extravagant, the paper expensive and beautiful, and when she looks at the letter, it's as if it's something from a different time.

Two days later, Tonks receives another one, unsigned again:
|

I saved my son's life by insisting on an old friend's support. There is nothing the Dark Lord does not think of, but friendship and love are harder to predict than pride and bravery.

| And, hours later: |

A simple calming draught soothes morning sickness much more efficiently than one meant for nausea.

My dearest Aisling,

It is wonderful, albeit indeed cursed. As I do intent to keep my fingers, I will not open it, but I am finding myself wearing it again and again, and I love it very much.

However, I must ask you not to steal. Certainly, Borgin is no honest man, but theft is... Well, you may not consider it below your station,, it certainly is below mine.

Love,
Narcissa

P.S.: Thank you very much.

Cissy darling,

Can't be too far beneath you since you're still wearing it, which does make me very happy by the way. I'm sure it looks lovely on you, like everything else you wear.

And you can ask me for whatever you want, but it doesn't mean I'll give it to you. Some of us have shallow pockets and few ways to make them deeper. I have to get by as best as I can.

Love,

Aisling

P.S You're very welcome.

[ Nymphadora doesn't bother with replying to the first letter, because while she might not be too pleased with her husband at the moment, she still won't stand for anyone calling him a beast.

Narcissa's note goes in the fire, and she stares at the burning parchment, her hands forming a frail shield over her still flat stomach.
]

I tried, kiddo.

[ The second letter arrives, and she can't bring herself to respond to that either even if she does recognise it as an olive branch of sorts.

All she can do is sink down on her bed and weep, because something about her aunt's words makes a fresh wave of pain wash over her as thoughts of Remus flood her mind. Love is really fucking hard to predict indeed.

And then there is that third note, and after a night of sleep, Dora sits down to write to Narcissa again.
]

I will fight for your son as well. I fight for all children, not just my own. I fight for all people, not just the ones I care about or like. If you want to get out, I will find some way to help you.

P.S: The calming draught really did work better.

Aisling, love,

in this case, I'll have to take my chances and see what I can get out of you.

Lucius will be on a business trip next week. If you would like to visit me and spend a little time in the very lap of luxury, it may put a damper on your criminal record, but it would certainly make me very happy.

Love,

| Time passes before Narcissa's next reply comes in. It is a risk she is taking, and she is unsure of why – if anything, this is the most futile form of protest there is. |

There is no way out that wouldn't cost me my life, and the life of my husband, and that of my son. I am sure he would even punish my sister, though I do not believe there is anything He could do to her that she wouldn't accept willingly.

| She re-reads it, and is tempted to burn it up as it is. This is nothing but a confession of her wanting to leave, if someone finds this letter, death isn't quite certain, but awfully likely. |

I may never be able to fully understand your choices, and I doubt you could understand mine. I am certain your mother has listed my every character flaw at great length, however, so I am sure you will find an explanation for yourself.

You wrote of fighting: there is no point. It isn't that resistance is futile, it's that the ones you are fighting have little to lose but their lives, their pride, their blood, and their ideals, because if they stop fighting now, if they would run and hide instead, they are guaranteed to lose their families. You cannot take that fear away; if you could, you would stand a better chance.

Dear Nymphadora,

I must be among the last people you would like to hear from. There is nothing I can do to soothe your pain, nor is there even anything I can say. This isn't fair to you, and in all my years of saying that you would deserve something like this, I never thought that, should the worst come to pass like it did, I would feel the depth of its injustice as I do now.

| She kind of, sort of, horribly believes that this might not be the worst fate for Tonks, but empathy isn't that foreign to her, at the end of the day. |

I am sure your mother supports you to the best of her ability, and I know that you do not need me or my help.

You can burn it all if you would like.

Narcissa

| The letter comes with a package, a sizable one, and it's filled with baby clothing – little wizard robes, tiny toddler shoes, even pointed toddler hats. Most appear gently used, and a surprising amount is kept in green and silver...

At the bottom, wrapped in silky paper, is something entirely new. It's a plush chameleon, enchanted to change colour at the touch of its owner's mood. It has Teddy's name stitched on it.
