The current situation doesn't matter. What James wanted an explanation for was why Remus would ever betray his friends. He doesn't raise his wand - how could he? - but it stays in his hand, tightly held between his clutching fingers.

"I know we--" he quiets, suspicious and tentatively horror struck by the implications of what Remus is suggesting. They did change Sirius and Peter as Secret Keepers. But they didn't tell anyone. Not even Dumbledore. Only Sirius and Peter would have known about that.

He wants to believe Remus still. He wants to. But at the same time that would mean that Peter...

It makes sense though - and how horrible it is that it does? - because Peter had been the secret keeper.

"Harry's a live?" he asks finally, breath rattling into his lungs and a hand coming to cover his mouth because the relief is a giant and it's leaning on him. "How... How did he ...? Merlin." Because nothing matters to him as much as that little boy.
