It's been so much longer for Sirius, years and years, and after his stint in Azkaban it had felt like living another life, like his time at Hogwarts, his time with James and Lily had been another lifetime, so far in the past that it doesn't quite register to him that they're referencing the night of their own death, that they don't know about all that's gone on since.

His mind will catch up soon enough, once it stops spinning.
