Hogwarts: A Jamjar Meme

HOGWARTS:
A JAMJAR MEME

Wizards of all ages and from all times: whatever you were doing, wherever you were - none of that matters now. You've been brought to Hogwarts, school of witchcraft and wizardry. You’ll find yourself in the Great Hall under a starry sky, illuminated by the light of a thousand candles.

What happened? Why were you brought here? How were you brought here? All questions to be answered, perhaps. But first, mingle with your kind and find a seat for yourself. This will be your home for a while.

Because there is no leaving. Student, staff, you with nothing to do - all of you trapped inside the school grounds.

Sorting to houses & Start-of-term feast
Those of you who have not been sorted into your houses, you're guided to sit on a stool while an old hat will contemplate a proper house for you. After, you can join your housemates at their long table.

The ghost of the headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, will soon give a speech once the last student is sorted...

"The very best of evenings to you! Now… to our new students, welcome. To our old students, welcome back! Another year full of magical education awaits you…"

He will warn you about the anti-curse charm set upon Hogwarts and how it will bring harm in equal measures to yourself. He will urge you to stay calm and have a lemondrop; they’ll be provided at all tables.

Dumbledore would like you all to note few things, Hogwarts attendees:

1. This will be a continuous, no commitment necessary “storyline.”
What does that mean? Depending on the level of interest, there will be at least one post per month on the 3B-DR that will continue the storyline which begins here. Players are encouraged to make top-levels in the dressing room if they want to keep this verse going with their characters. Madame Rosmerta’s made a tag specifically for this.

2. Multiple versions of characters at various ages are welcome.
Whether that means there’s three Harry’s all in fifth year, or one Harry in first year, a second in third year, and a third in sixth year is up to you. All three Harry’s could also interact, depending on player preferences. AU versions of (HP)canon and non-(HP)canon characters are also welcome. Sometimes people disappear from Hogwarts and sometimes they come back.

3. Schoolwork
Dumbledore's ghost will invite all characters of age and knowledge to teach their specialties to the younger wizards. If your character could be possibly a teacher, or is interested in teaching, refer to this thread to sign up for a teaching position. The courses do not need to be anything serious (unless you want them to be). If your character would be interested in a course, you can look it up from the character's toplevel. Your character doesn't need to be of student age to participate in courses. (They're free for all!)

4. Sign up for your house.
Here is a thread for all the Hogwarts houses that your character could be sorted in.

5. This means… war!
Are you a Death Eater? A member of the Order? Rival students? It’s likely your character will encounter someone they don’t get along with. Duels are fine, but beware that any attacks meant to cause harm (curses) will backfire on the caster. If your character doesn’t care that damage will also bounce back to them, then Dumbledore’s ghost will be intervening. He won’t tolerate harm to any of his students… even if it’s harm to Tom.

6. Housecup
Of course points will be awarded and taken away by teachers and prefects. You can leave a comment in this thread for the points taken or given. Madam Rosmerta will add them up together for the next post. You can also sign up for a prefect role. Each house has one and that one will change in each post. First come, first serve is the rule, except if your character was a prefect in the last post, you can't sign up in this one.

    1. Toplevel with your character
Name in the title line. Do not leave an empty toplevel. Write a starter like you would to a game event. Link to preferences if you’d prefer.

    2. Tag other characters
The name of the game is interaction. Why is your character here? Do they want to be here? Are they being reunited with lost loved ones?

    3. Have fun!
Dumbledore (and Madame Rosmerta) is watching. Behave yourselves. Don’t godmod, infomod, respect other players, etc.

Woah hey there young man, that is a metric arseton of information you're tossing his way right now, give him a moment to look absolutely shocked. First of all, Ginny Weasley - well, good job there son, but he's a bit more rocked by the fact that Remus has a son, and even further still by the previous implication.

"Foster-"

Wait, wait, he's only recently kicked the bucket himself here, this is taking him a few moments to process. "Remus is..?"

"I'm sorry, Sirius. He didn't make it through the last battle."

Harry rubs a hand over his face and looks mildly disappointed in himself. "I didn't mean to spring it up on you like that.

"He and your cousin, Tonks, married. And they had a baby boy. But both of the passed away while fighting Death Eaters. A lot of people died."

No, that's.. it's not bloody fair, is what it is. Did they all give themselves to this damned war? Could not even a single one of them live on and find something like happiness? Peace? And he'd left a little tot behind, just like James, and damned if the injustice of it all doesn't seem infuriating.

Sirius has no real regrets. He's sure that Remus didn't either, or Tonks. They'd fought this war because they chose to, and war is a bloody, ugly, painful thing, and to a last every member of the Order knew what they were risking, that injury, torture, and death were on the table for all of them, perhaps. Doesn't make it any easier to hear, though. Sirius exhales slowly, and fails completely to keep the ache from his voice when he speaks again.

"Tonks, eh? Didn't see that one coming. Not a bad fit though, I'd say."

Dammit. Dammit. Sirius scrubs his hands over his face.

"Who else'd we lose?"

Harry's had two years to get used to the idea that they're gone. It still hurts. He still hears the words Voldemort decided to throw at him in the middle of the battle. No one else has to die for you, Harry Potter. He's never been able to face the grief of Arthur and Molly, or Andromeda, who makes a valiant effort not to dish it at him but sometimes she needs someone to talk with about her daughter. The thought of Colin, and his little body makes Harry's eyes fill with tears even now.

"I'm so sorry, Sirius," he says again, voice hollow and low. "Dumbledore died before the battle. Fred Weasley. Snape. Moody. Ted Tonks. Dobby. Hedwig..."

[personal profile] thedogfather 2017-02-11 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Harry rattles off names, and some of them hit him harder than others. Some surprise him, others don't. Hedwig, somehow, seems one of the lowest blows for her complete innocence, and how terribly fond Harry was of that bird; Sirius knows him well enough to think he surely blames himself for her death. Might very well blame himself for all of that, in that vein, but now's not the time to cut into that particular wound.

"It's all right, Harry," he says quietly, once the sharpness of the moment has passed. "I'm just.. glad you made it through. Glad that it all turned out right, in the end." Sacrifices or not, they achieved what they were aiming for, didn't they?

[personal profile] oncedead 2017-02-11 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yes, it's all over now. He's truly dead. Even the part that lived inside me."

Harry nods. He might seem a little numb and it would be because he is. It's been two years and he still doesn't like revisiting those memories.

"I'm just sorry for every death, of course." They could have been avoided. But he doesn't point that out either. People get angry when he does. "Ministry is under some upgrades as well. I think we'll be good until the next dark wizard."

[personal profile] thedogfather 2017-02-11 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, what Sirius can read of Harry's thoughts is certainly problematic, and Sirius makes a mental note to bring this up at a later date, but he's already rained on Harry's parade enough today, so he's going to let it go for the time being. It's difficult to be too just now, when he knows now that Harry and his friends survived, that he's lived on, that bloody Voldemort won't be darkening their doorstep again. If Harry says it's all over now, then Sirius will take him at his word. He offers a wry smile.

"I hope they're planning to gut the whole bloody system," he says, slipping his thumbs into his pockets. "Just tell me they've gone and gotten rid of Fudge already."

[personal profile] oncedead 2017-02-11 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"Fudge?" Harry snorts with a hint of laughter. "Yes, he was gone that night you died. Voldemort and Dumbledore fought in the ministry hallways that night. Then voldemort tried to possess me and Fudge arrived to see the tail end of that. There wasn't denying that he is back after that."

He shrugs and thinks back.

"Rufus Scrimgeour took over then. He died before the war. Voldemort took over the ministry and Pius Thicknesse was appointed until the end of the war when Shacklebolt took over. He's been running some new lines..."

Harry would like to see more of them implemented, though.

Sirius listens with rapt attention while Harry gives him a brief rundown of all that's passed in the years he's missed, the jumble of wizarding politics, and he doesn't interrupt, but his opinions are writ clear upon his face at every turn.

By the time Harry finishes up, however, Sirius seems content enough, and he's rubbing his scruffy jaw thoughtfully, before he's taking Harry by the elbow to lead him gently toward the nearest table; if they're going to chat might as well not stand around in the middle of the hall doing it.

"Shacklebolt, eh? Far better option than the other two, he'll do you all well," Sirius says, and exhales slowly. "But what about you, Harry? How've you been?"
oncedead: (pic#11013615)

[personal profile] oncedead 2017-02-12 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"He's doing okay," Harry says with a smile as he lets himself be guided to a table and takes a seat. "I'm alright, Sirius. Really. Me, Ron and Hermione lived in a tent for a year, looking for Horcruxes and trying to stop Voldemort. We were declared undesirables during that year so we had really no choice. I didn't go to school but they still took me and Ron into the auror office to work after the war was over.

"There's so much to do with the corruption of the ministry," he says with a small sigh and reaches over to pull a cup towards himself and fills it with pumpkin juice. "As I mentioned earlier, I'm looking over Teddy with Andromeda. He's a lovely boy. Maybe he'll come live with me and Ginny later."

Or at least that's what Harry hopes could happen. They're both so busy right now, though. "She plays in the Holly Harpies as a seeker. We have a flat together but um... If I'm honest I'm living on Ron's couch right now." He laughs and then grimaces into his cup. "We're not exactly the dream team, I guess."

[personal profile] thedogfather 2017-02-12 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Much as Sirius enjoys the news, hearing about what's going on with the ministry, and the wizarding world as a whole since he left it, it's hearing about Harry that he really enjoys. Harry's life, how he's been spending it, all the silly, ordinary things he's been able to do with himself now that he's not bound to Privet Drive or chased by Lord Voldemort. It gives Sirius a sense of warm satisfaction, a contagious happiness.

Sirius breaks into a warm, broad smile.

"Got yourself in the doghouse already, eh?"
oncedead: (2568735 (28) copy)

[personal profile] oncedead 2017-02-13 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Harry laughs and rubs his neck, cheeks flushing with a hint of colour. "Yeah, I think I did."

He pushes the cup on the table and leans back against the edge of the table. "Sometimes I don't know what she's thinking at all. When I try to be nice and not complain, she gets on my case for not saying what I mean and when I do say what I mean we fight like cats and dogs."

His shoulders square up and he looks at Sirius with a small smile. "I do love her, though."

He's probably just as pathetic as his father about this.

[personal profile] thedogfather 2017-02-13 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
With a low, merry sort of laugh Sirius leans to pour himself a goblet full of pumpkin juice as well.

"Well, that's what really matters, you know? Don't let anyone tell you otherwise."

Given how incredibly single he is and always has been, Sirius might not seem the best person to give advice when it comes to marriage and love, but he's surely going to give it anyway.

"When you've got love, everything else is just water under the bridge, yeah?
oncedead: (2568735 (6))

[personal profile] oncedead 2017-02-14 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
"I suppose." Harry tilts his head thoughtfully. He's not exactly sure about that but time will tell. It's not the first time he's living on Ron's couch by far. Usually they do get back together. He'd just like to cut the time in between to a minimum.

"I don't know what gets into me with her, either. She just makes me so angry at times."

Temper, that's their problem.

But Sirius doesn't really need to hear about it, does he? Harry clears his throat and pulls the cup up for another sip. "What do you think happened here?"
thedogfather: (.218)

[personal profile] thedogfather 2017-02-15 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Of course he needs to hear about it! Shutup Harry, he wants to know all about the stupid, silly, completely normal things that have happened to you, okay??

"Your mum and dad were the same way, you know," he says with a grin, and a sparkle in his eye. "Or close enough, as like. Gingers, Harry, they've got sharp tempers."

And Potters too, apparently. James was always quite easy-going, but oh, when he got in his moods he was just unbearable. But fine, fine, if you really want to talk about boring things like what's going on here rather than the dirty laundry of your mundane life, he'll make that sacrifice. "Good question. Honestly, I don't suppose it's terribly surprising. Wizards like to think we know all about magic, but truth be told, we don't."
oncedead: (2568735 (15))

[personal profile] oncedead 2017-02-17 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
You've gaught his attention, godfather. Harry could listen to stories about his mum and dad for hours on no end.

"They were?" he asks, eyes wide and curious. "They fought like that too? Did she kick him out?"

It seems to be the Potter curse, having a thing for those sharp tempered gingers. Not that Harry is complaining. He rather likes his gingers. (Both of them. All of them. Ginny most of all.)

"Did my dad also have a sharp temper?" he asks, a little quietly so, looking at Sirius with almost pleadingly. His mum and dad are like the poster couple of eternal love for him. If they had issues, maybe it's not so hopeless for him and Ginny too.

"And yeah, I guess you're right about that." He's more than eager to drop the topic, though. Because Sirius always has something much more interesting to talk about.
thedogfather: (.215)

[personal profile] thedogfather 2017-02-19 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course he should have known that Harry would be immediately piqued by the mention of his parents, he always has been, for as long as Sirius had known him (not long enough, truly), so he drops the subject of the school and magic for now to instead talk of better things.

With a chuckle, he leans forward and laces his fingers loosely on the tabletop.

"Oh, she had a temper for sure, your mother. She could be very.. energetic," he says, the ghost of a nostalgic smile creeping over his face. "Your dad's temper wasn't quite so bad, but he had a real penchant for walking right into trouble without looking both ways for it, and he never really learned not to. So he was on the sofa quite often, yes."
oncedead: (pic#11013616)

[personal profile] oncedead 2017-02-23 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Harry can't help but laugh at that, because it's funny to think about his dad like that. And his mum, too. But dad most of all.

He knows she was good and had a heart in a right place. He's seen enough of Snape's memories to know Lily Evans like he did. But he's only really seen glimpses of his dad, nothing much to make him familiar at all.

"Was he angry about it?" he asks curiously. He's always so angry when he fights with Ginny. At first it seems like the best solution to just walk away. Then half an hour passes and he misses her terribly.

[personal profile] thedogfather 2017-02-24 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
Harry's laugh earns a quicksilver grin from Sirius, his eyes crinkling merrily at the corners; the boy's always enjoyed these sorts of stories. A shame they hadn't had enough time together for Sirius to have regaled him properly.

"Mm, not angry so much, I don't think," he says with a shrug, squinting thoughtfully. "More dramatic, got terribly mopey when she shouted at him, you know. He got angry, but not quite as often, but doesn't mean I didn't have to endure his moaning and whining."
oncedead: (pic#11013611)

[personal profile] oncedead 2017-02-24 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
They have time now! Don't discount this. He's having the time of his life, surrounded by people he thought he lost. He'll never want to leave this place.

Harry grins at Sirius' assessment of his dad. He sounds a little like Ron in that regard. Only Ron gets mad really often, but he also mopes and Harry has to listen to his whining and griping.

"I bet mum didn't like that very much."
thedogfather: (.194)

[personal profile] thedogfather 2017-03-01 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
He's not discounting it! He's just an old man with regrets, all right, you'll understand when you're an old man too.

He's really eating up Harry's attention though, it feels nice to chat with him like this, without a war in the way. "No, she didn't fall for his crocodile tears at all, to his chagrin," he says, pulling a plate of cookies near with two fingers. "She was ruthless, your mum, kept him in his place."
oncedead: (2568735 (2))

[personal profile] oncedead 2017-03-01 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Harry would have been happy to just live like this. Spending time with Sirius and talking about amusing things, about his mum and dad, about Sirius and Remus. About magic and their friends and family.

They're both equally sentimental and starved for love. It's a match made in heaven.

"She was very bright, wasn't she?" he says and leans his jaw to his palm, propping his elbow on the table. "Professor Slughorn told me about her when she was still in school. But I think dad wasn't slow either. It sounds like they knew each other pretty well, though."
